Day 1: Welcome to Alaska

Arrive in Anchorage, make your own way and check into your centrally located accommodation.

This evening you will go hunting for the best light of the day, which during summer at this latitude can last for several glorious hours before sunset. You’ll be transported to scenic locations around Anchorage and Chugach State Park to photograph the Alaskan wild. The tour is flexible and allows for spontaneous stops to photograph wildlife en route. Along the way, you’ll have full creative and technical support from your Alaska Photo Treks guide.

Day 2: Exploring Anchorage

After breakfast this morning you will meet your local guide and get a customized Anchorage city tour as well as some of the best wildlife viewing opportunities around the Anchorage area! Keep your eyes open for moose, caribou, black bears, and even brown bears. Today will be the perfect opportunity to showcase the photography skills you learned last night.

Back in Anchorage, you can visit two museums today (both within walking distance), where you will take some time to explore these local gems! The remainder of today is free to do some shopping downtown, take a trolley tour, or simply relax in the hotel.

Day 3: The Alaskan Railroad! Anchorage to Fairbanks via Denali National Park

Today you will travel in Gold Star Service through the world renowned Denali National Park to Fairbanks. This twelve hour journey will be fully narrated and the perfect opportunity to photograph the fall colours, and famous scenery that Alaska is home to.

Upon arrival in Fairbanks, make your own way to your hotel and check in for the next two nights.

Day 4: Exploring Fairbanks

Touring Fairbanks and the surrounding area is something that is a must do while you’re in Alaska! Explore one of the most famous Gold Rush cities and out to the North Pole (Alaska) to visit Santa and his reindeer.

The afternoon provides you with the opportunity to stop in at a local artisan’s shop where you will take part in a glass workshop and make our own souvenir!

Day 5: North to the Polar Bears of Kaktovik

Polar bears! Have we said enough? After a scenic flight over the Brooks Range, you will soar over Coldfoot and above the Arctic Circle. After refueling in Deadhorse/Prudhoe Bay you will watch the landscape change as you pass over the Alaskan Pipeline into the Alaska wildlife reserve to a traditional town of 250 people. After landing in Kaktovik you will be welcomed into the community and enjoy a hot lunch. The afternoon is all about viewing the local polar bear population. You will view from a small boat with a heated cabin and view polar bears of all ages and sizes. From cubs to large alpha males, you will observe their behaviour and have the chance to take some amazing photographs!

After your stunning day you will fly back to Fairbanks and settle in at your lodge accommodations outside of Fairbanks where there will hopefully be some northern lights viewing opportunities.

Day 6: Relax at the Lodge, Soak in the Hot Springs

Breakfast at the lodge today will be at our leisure as you look out over the beautiful Alaska range in the distance. The panoramic views are the perfect start to today! You will make your way over to a water foul conservation area today where you can do a 1.5 mile hike through beautiful fields and trails getting the opportunity for autumn colour photography and staying on the lookout for birds.

This afternoon you will have the opportunity to head out to Chena Hot Springs to relax with a soak in the natural pools. Afterwards you will have some time to explore the largest year-round Ice Museum before heading back to the lodge.

Keep your eyes to the skies tonight for your last chance to watch the northern lights dance above your head.

Beginning in Anchorage, this itinerary includes time in Alaska’a largest city to explore and learn to photograph the Alaskan wild. From Turnagain Arm we will look for moose, caribou, black and brown bears, and even beluga whales in the bay. The stunning colours of autumn will surround us as we will travel by rail north to Fairbanks with a quick stop in Denali National Park. After taking some time to explore Fairbanks, head even further north to the community of Kaktovik on Alaska’s north shore for a once in a lifetime polar bear viewing experience. From a small boat you will explore the surrounding shores photographing the king’s of the Arctic. Back over the Brooks mountain range, you will head back to the heart of the Alaskan gold rush and current hub of northern Alaska activity for a wilderness lodge stay near Fairbanks, and more time to explore this incredible area.
